High Impact Practices

Escape Rooms

My LIT 2480 classrooms are student-centered; students take ownership of their own learning, by working collaboratively, solving problems, and thinking critically. Students explore human rights and sustainability issues throughout the course. My students conduct research on social injustices, but they also design escape rooms that motivate other students to become changemakers themselves.

Service-Learning

Serice-Learning is perhaps the most important high impact practice I have incorporated in all of my courses for almost two decades. Civic engagement tied to academic coursework is a way in which I am able to combine two of my greatest passions, teaching and service. Through my implementation of service-learning, I hope to instill in my students the same love for serving that has captivated me on a personal and professioal level my entire adult life.

POGIL

POGIL stands for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning. I am a new POGIL practitioner. While POGIL was originally created by educators in STEM fields I am currently working on authoring a POGIL book for English educators.

Undergraduate Research

Students in my courses research literary theories and incorporate them in their literary analyses. In addition to course-related research, I also mentor students in scholarly research and encourage them to present at conferences. Throughout the years, I have also co-presented with students at state and national conferences.

International Education

For the past four years, I have developed four study abroad experiences for my literature students. Each course has had a Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Outlander theme. We have traveled to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Croatia. I have also been engaged in further work in India through Manodharma Travel Grant and in Iraq through the Global Solutions virtual exchanges.

PLTL

Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) has been a staple in my courses since I was first introduced to the methodology in 2015. Over the years I have implemented PLTL in English, creative writing, literature, and reading courses. I have been fortunate to have over nine Peer Academic Leaders (PAL) work to support my students in successful completion of each course.
